Foot-and-mouth disease

Since the February 2001 outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Great Britain, farmers involved in animal agriculture around the world have been concerned about the possible spread of this devastating condition. Foot-and-mouth disease is highly contagious and affects all manner of domestic and wild animal species, including cattle, swine, sheep, llamas, deer and grizzly bears. Early signs of infection include fluid-filled lesions near their eyes, teats, noses and feet, fever and excessive salivation. Animals infected with foot-and-mouth disease are destroyed. Federal officials are limiting imports and taking biosecurity precautions to prevent spread of foot-and-mouth disease to the United States.
